Zărnești town is located in the SW of the “Țara Bârsei” depression, in a plain with a golf-like appearance, along the Bârsa and Turcu rivers, which penetrates to the foot of the Piatra Craiului massif.

The town is located 25 km from Brașov, the county seat and borders the following administrative units: N with Șinca and Poiana Mărului communes, NE with Vulcan commune, E with Râșnov town, S with Bran and Moieciu communes, at SW with Argeș county and V with Hârseni commune.

The major relief unit is the Piatra Craiului massif, developed in the form of a 25 km long limestone ridge oriented NE-SW, which has slopes of over 30 ° and very high elevations compared to the neighboring areas. The geological composition (marl, limestone), geomorphological phenomena (erosion, disaggregation) create unique landscape elements that give spectacular relief.

The climate of the area is transitional sub-mountain, the average annual temperature being 6.6 ° C, in the high mountain area, which decreases with altitude (4 ° C). The atmospheric precipitation is very rich, around 1000 mm per year, the amount of precipitation increasing to 1200 mm in the high mountain area.

The stream network is collected by the river Bârsa, the main watercourse in the area. During rainy periods or when the snow melts, torrents and torrential runoff can form, which give the landscape a spectacular look.

The most extensive form of vegetation is the forest (hardwood, mixed, coniferous) followed by the subalpine floor with subalpine shrubs and meadows, all areas with a rich and varied fauna: invertebrates, reptiles, birds and mammals.
